Discovering the style of the mountain home: a fusion of character and uniqueness

Summer in the mountains is an unparalleled experience, a mountain retreat distinguished by a unique style full of personality, worthy of appreciation and value. The houses nestled among the majestic mountain peaks have a charm all their own, completely different from that of city dwellings. And it is precisely this characteristic that I love most about our mountain home: the atmosphere that one can breathe is unrepeatable, and over the years we have enriched it with furnishings, which have been carefully designed down to the smallest detail. And it is precisely with the use of different colors, fabrics and materials than in our house in the city that we have given it a strong and authentic character that we love to rediscover every time. When beginning to choose furniture for a mountain home, I believe it is essential to take into consideration the surroundings, the natural enchantment that surrounds it and the magic that only the mountains can provide.

With the passage of time, the style of mountain homes has undergone transformations, giving rise to different trends in the decor of these homes. Architecture and interior design have evolved, leading to the emergence of studios that specialize in the construction of wonderful mountain homes, equipped with every comfort and suited to the most sophisticated tastes. Personally, I have identified four major groups into which to categorize the mountain home style:

Riviera Tablecloth Gitane Tablecloth Emilia Tablecloth

The rustic country style:

This style embraces the warmth and authenticity of the countryside, with raw wood elements, furniture with a traditional flavor, and details that recall the surrounding nature.

The hyperminimalist style:

This trend focuses on simplicity and clean lines, with minimalist design and modern materials, but without sacrificing comfort.

The modern style:

Here innovative design and the use of contemporary materials combine to create a sophisticated atmosphere while maintaining a connection with the surrounding landscape.

The classical or hyperdecor style:

which draws on classical influences with elaborate details and refined furnishings, adding a touch of timeless elegance.

Each of these styles exists naturally for townhomes as well, but it is in the mountains that they acquire a unique and special connotation due to the unique characteristics of these charming dwellings among the peaks. In the article we will explore in detail the peculiarities of each style, discovering how we can best enhance the unique character of the mountain home and make every stay an unforgettable experience.

This is probably the style we all know, with that touch of wood and the textiles with mountain motifs like hearts, deer, bears and all. It is undeniably cozy, but at times it can come across as a bit predictable and kitschy, and that's not really my cup of tea. As much as I love the warm, homey ambiance that the rustic style offers, I would like something more personal, an atmosphere that really reflects who we are and captures the essence of the mountains in a more authentic way. It's like I'm looking for a more modern and fresh version of the typical country style, with a twist that really makes it my own. If you love this style, you can strike a balance between the charm of mountain traditions and a more personal reinterpretation of those elements. Perhaps you could keep some rustic accents, but also introduce more contemporary and creative elements, such as a few design pieces that blend well with the natural surroundings, or fabrics that add a touch of liveliness without losing the authentic soul of the mountain home.

The Hyper Minimalist Style.

This trend in furniture reflects a strong desire to lighten up from the trappings of civilization in order to reconnect strongly with nature and its elements. Brave people who opt for this style for their mountain home prefer totally natural and handcrafted materials, such as raw wood, virgin wool, linen, hemp, leather, and iron. The mountain home of those who want to experience the mountains in a somewhat ancestral style is deprived of many comforts and brings back to the center the simplicity of small things and slow rhythms. The house is populated with noises that are far removed from civilization, and every detail is designed not to betray this concept of purity. I have happened to furnish several houses of this type and I have loved this experience, which I fully share. I have chosen for my clients handcrafted fabrics made on a loom with raw linens or rustic wools. The most appropriate colors for this style of home are all non-colors, that is, the very colors of the raw materials or at any rate the dusty, soft tones of wool , wood and stone. I set their tables with heavy and soft linens, wooden tableware and simple, textured objects. The simple pleasure of touching such beautiful and real objects is in itself a rejuvenating experience. This is undoubtedly the type of mountain furniture that I feel is closest to my philosophy

Also for the bedrooms the mountain style has its own special character and the bed is always played with voluminous comforters, an abundance of soft pillows and additional plaids or eiderdowns . For colors I have ranged from different tones of a restful sage green, to all natural shades of Mastic, Ivory, Sand e Walnut. On the sofas I have always placed tricot woolen plaids, with handcrafted work or in traditional fabrics such as loden or boiled wool.

The modern style

In the mountains, as in the city, the modernity and cleanliness of certain lines creates effects of absolute beauty, combined, however, with all the comforts that modern technology can offer. Magnificent chalets made of wood and stone but populated by boundless home automation. Large open and bright spaces, far removed from the cramped and dark cottages seeking protection from the cold of old mountain homes, with built-in custom-made and retractable furniture Even in this style, however, the use of noble and natural materials remains the leitmotif, and the effect is truly splendid. Modern-style mountain houses are oases of peace and comfort, soft and warm bubbles of light from which to observe the harsh and poignant nature of snow-capped peaks and forests The predominant colors are milky white and all shades of gray from the lightest to graphite. For the sleeping area, I would alternate white (LINK) with charcoal or play on a wide palette of grays. This style fascinates me greatly even though my nature would hardly be able to live long without those rustic elements that are irresistible to me...but as always it's about being true to one's style to achieve the result we love most.

The hyper decor style

There is a style of mountain homes that emerged particularly around the 1980s, which conceived of homes furnished with great richness of detail, workmanship, materials, and fabrics. The most commonly used materials were richly decorated or painted furniture, and important furnishing fabrics, such as brocades and velvets. There was an abundance of trimmings, and the predominant colors were burgundy and forest green. In some places this style is still used even though it is a bit heavy in my opinion. Regardless of the decor then I love the mountains because it allows me to have fun with invitations to friends. Nature in summer offers the opportunity to prepare atmospheric outdoor dinners and aperitifs around lit braziers. The long days and cool weather make it possible to go from organized picnic days to evenings with invitations for polenta and mushrooms To set a table in the mountains I love to use linen tablecloths in natural colors from bright Mastic to Sand to Walnut. to which I love to match wooden tableware, natural terracotta and ceramics in earth tones. For decorative elements such as underplates candlesticks or trays, in the mountains I find pewter with simple but handcrafted workmanship really appreciable. A few old silver items such as cutlery are also perfect. I serve water in simple earthenware pitchers and bread the bread in fabric holders or wooden baskets. Also very suitable are all items such as serving dishes or copper ladles.

Also always perfect in the mountains are tartan fabrics, preferably with simple finishes and even mixed together for a sophisticated but contemporary result Alternatively, to set a cheerful and typically mountain table, I like to play on elements in shades of cream and red such as a simple Vichy checkerboard that looks great with the abundance of wood characteristic of mountain decor. Green light also to some frivolous touches ( without exaggeration) like a ruffle but banish kitsch elements like bears and Gnomes! If the house has a contemporary style, charcoal colored linen is also a choice that I find very elegant. In this case we will complete the table with plates glasses and cutlery with clean lines. Whatever your idea, always feel free to mix and experiment: after all, the goal is to create a space where we can truly feel at home, with an intimate connection to the surrounding area and nature. And I believe that finding the right combination of style and personality can lead to exactly what you are looking for: a unique mountain home that is perfectly in tune with us.
