Choosing a table is only simple on the surface. But if you've ever had to do it, you know that there are many unknowns, and doubts arise when you least expect them: will it be too big? Too small? Will I be able to set the table elegantly?

After twenty years spent creating tablecloths, placemats and table runners, I have learned one thing: the right table is not the most fashionable one, but the one that makes us feel good in the space we live in.

Many people write to me or come to our shops to ask for advice on how to set a beautiful table. But often the problem lies elsewhere: it is not easy to choose the right table if you are not clear about its function in the home.

Because even before it is set, a table is a presence that opens or closes a space and, above all, sets the tone. A round, square or rectangular table changes the atmosphere of a room. And for those who, like me, believe that the home should tell the story of who we are without the need for too many words, the shape of the table is a fundamental choice.

This guide stems from there, from my everyday experience: between choosing a fabric, finishing an edge and telling the story of a table. I will not talk about models to buy, but about proportions, balance and perhaps what you did not think about when buying a table: how will I dress it? Will I find suitable tablecloths on the market, or will I have to have them made to measure? Because when the table works with the space, even a simple tablecloth becomes the protagonist.

The right table shape creates harmony with the space

Choosing the shape of a table is not just a matter of taste, but of visual and functional balance. The right table fits naturally into the space, completing it and giving it character.

A round table creates movement and lightness, while a square table brings symmetry and order. With a rectangular table, you can define the axis of the space, guide the eye and, of course, encourage conviviality.

Often, a small error in shape or proportion is enough to completely change the perception of a room. On the contrary, a well-chosen table is like a director: it brings guests together, invites them to sit down and conveys your idea of home.

Round table – The choice that embraces

Why choose a round table

The round table has its own magic: it eliminates distances and allows all diners to look each other in the eye. It is perfect for those who love to entertain in an informal but refined way, with an intimate and welcoming touch

An iconic example is Eero Saarinen's Tulip Table, with its central base that frees up legroom and a fluid line that adapts to any setting, from classic to contemporary.

Where it looks best

  • In small or square rooms
  • In kitchens with irregular corners
  • In homes that want to break the mould

If space is limited but you want a table that encourages conversation, a round table is the right choice.

A diameter between 100 and 130 cm is perfect for 4-6 people, but today you can also find larger round tables, up to 180 or 200 cm.

Be careful, though: dressing and setting them is not easy!

I do not recommend round tablecloths: I prefer square tablecloths on round tables. The four corners that hang down dress the table with more elegance and a less classic style. They also allow you to enhance decorative edges such as our Bauhaus, Amalfi, Eden or Venaria..

PROS

  • Seats 12 or 14 guests in a small space.
  • Everyone can see each other and participate in the conversation.
  • Plates and bottles are within reach of everyone.

CONS

  • It is more difficult to find suitable tablecloths for tables over 120 cm in diameter.
  • Large tables often require a central turntable.
  • Rectangular runners and placemats do not hang well.

Recommended sizes and tablecloths

  • Ø100–120 cm → Square tablecloth 140–170 cm or round Ø180–220 cm
  • For special dinners → Square tablecloth 180x180 cm or round Ø250 cm

Style and materials

  • Antique wood: stunning when set against the backdrop of a modern home, such as 19th-century carved walnut tables.
  • Iron or Corten steel: bold character but softened with a tablecloth and natural fabrics.
  • Crystal: light and transparent, but requires a lot of care.

With a round table, I like to use light linen tablecloths, hand-hemmed, with low centrepieces and candles.

Extra tip: two overlapping tablecloths, one plain and one patterned, to add depth and movement.

Square table – Order and symmetry

Why choose a round table?

The square table has a quiet strength. It brings balance to spaces, is compact yet spacious, perfect for small families. It is also the ideal shape for creating visual islands within large rooms.

Perfect examples are the Shaker table in natural wood, simple and well-proportioned, or the Quadro table by Miniforms, with a minimalist structure and oak top.

Where it looks best

  • In well-proportioned spaces
  • Where you want to maintain order and geometry
  • When used as a reading, study or breakfast table

PROS

  • Perfectly proportioned, visually harmonious

CONS

  • With an odd number of guests, it is more difficult to set the table in a balanced way.
  • Crossed table runners should be avoided.

Recommended sizes and tablecloths

  • 90x90 cm → 140x140 cm tablecloth
  • 110x110 cm → 170x170 or 180x180 cm tablecloth
  • 120x120 cm → 180x180 cm (everyday) or 200x200 cm (elegant) tablecloth

Style and materials

Square tables allow you to use both tablecloths and placemats.

I love using long tablecloths, even in simple fabrics such as checked cotton. Pure linen placemats with square corners are also perfect for enhancing symmetry.

For a sophisticated result, all you need are white plates, patterned napkins, and a proportionate centerpiece.

Rectangular table – classic or contemporary, inviting conviviality

When to choose a rectangular table

The rectangular table is the traditional shape. It is the table for families and festive meals, but it can also be modern when reinterpreted with contemporary materials.

From antique wooden Fratino tables to Scandinavian models in natural oak or iron and solid wood, it is the most versatile shape.

Where it looks best

  • In large, well-lit rooms
  • In homes where guests are often entertained
  • For those who love a dramatic mise en place

CONS

  • If it is too wide or too short, it can appear heavy to the eye.

Recommended sizes and tablecloths

  • 160x90 cm → Tablecloth 220x140 cm
  • 200x100 cm → Tablecloth 260x160 cm
  • 250–300 cm → Tablecloth 320x180 cm or custom-made

Materials

  • Contemporary wood: solid or reclaimed wood planks with open grain, perfect for a Nordic or industrial chic style.
  • Tiles and cement tiles: charming and artisanal, as in tables with colored cement tile tops or handmade tiles, which make each piece unique.

Mise en place and style

The rectangular table allows you to play with center or cross runners, 280–300 cm long. In the center, candles, clear glass vases, or seasonal arrangements.

There are few standard tablecloths on the market, but for an elegant result, it is essential that they hang evenly on all sides.

Extra tip: for a dramatic effect, use a floor-length tablecloth and matching or contrasting crosswise table runners.

Sculptural table

These tables are like works of art, often made of marble, stone, or carved wood, such as the models by Angelo Mangiarotti, Gubi, or Cassina.

Where they look best

  • In large, well-lit rooms.
  • In homes where guests are often entertained.
  • For those who love a dramatic mise en place.

PRO

  • Extremely dramatic, they add character to the home.
  • Difficult to cover with classic tablecloths
  • It is better to use placemats or underplates so as not to hide the shape
  • Style and materials
  • When purchasing, you should be aware that this type of table does not allow for the use of classic tablecloths.

    Style and materials

When purchasing this type of table, you should be aware that it does not allow for the use of classic tablecloths.

Very often, covering an anthropomorphic table with a tablecloth can give the impression of an object that is poorly covered and hidden under a sheet. The shape, which differs from that of a traditional table, inspires a certain mistrust and, objectively speaking, looks a little sinister when covered. What could be hidden underneath?

There are always solutions for setting this type of table, but it is good to know when making this type of choice that you will easily find yourself wanting to protect your beautiful table for practical reasons and not knowing how to do so.

Buying a sculptural table is a deliberate choice, also in terms of how to set it. The best solution for this table is almost always not to cover it, but to use placemats or underplates.

You have made a bold choice, so let your table dictate the style. Complement it with a few elements that harmonize with the materials and shape of the table. Glass and iron are good choices for candle holders. If the table is asymmetrical and you want to add a centerpiece, opt for something simple but not mundane, such as a branch or a series of small glass vases alternating flowers and candles in each.

Listen to the space, then choose with your heart

A well-chosen table is not only functional, but becomes the silent heart of the home. It can gather laughter and confidences, host leisurely breakfasts or crowded dinners, become the setting for carefully arranged table settings or everyday gestures.

My advice is simple: don't be guided solely by aesthetics, but observe your space, think about how you live in your home, and choose the shape that best suits you.

And then, dress it well. A well-draped tablecloth, a carefully folded napkin, a lit candle: small gestures are enough to transform everyday life into something that resembles beauty.

Because, in the end, a well-set table is not just a matter of style. If you have any further questions, please consult our dedicated page.
