There is a time, when June arrives, when the house asks to change its skin. I feel it right away: the light becomes sharper, the windows seem to warm up, the morning air already has the promise of warmth in it. And so I enter the rooms and look at them with different eyes, because I know that even the choice of fabrics becomes crucial to making the rooms breathe and us along with them.

In summer, every material speaks of well-being (or, conversely, discomfort), and I now know from experience that only natural fabrics really know how to make a difference.

That is why, year after year, I continue to choose linen and cotton for every corner of the house, from curtains to tablecloths, from sheets to towels. They are living fibers that adapt, help us not to suffer the heat, and have that spontaneous way of decorating that I feel is close to my taste. Today I want to tell you how I choose them, what weights I prefer, and why I avoid anything synthetic in summer without regret.

Why I choose natural fibers in summer

Every time I touch a synthetic fabric, I immediately feel the difference-polyester, acrylic, mixed fibers look like they might fool the eye, but not the skin: they retain heat, do not absorb moisture, make people sweat, and do not let air circulate well. Result? That uncomfortable sticky warm feeling that I just can't stand.

Linen and cotton, on the other hand, are a little miracle of natural balance.

  • Linen is amazing: it regulates temperature, insulates from heat, absorbs body moisture and quickly evaporates it. It stays cool to the touch, always.
  • Top-quality cotton (like the kind we use for our tablecloths and sponges) is softer from the first use, provides excellent breathability, and is a pleasure to live with every day.

Then there's hemp and other plant fibers, which are interesting and add variety, but my heart remains true to linen: it's versatile, it transforms, it changes with us, it becomes more beautiful wash after wash.

How do I choose the linen? It all starts with the weight

Many people think that linen is a unique fabric, but this is not the case at all. The magic of linen also lies in its weight, which profoundly changes the final effect and the use we can make of it.

Light linen (120-160 g/m²): perfect for curtains and summer sheets

When I want to give the house an almost impalpable feel, I choose the lightest linen. It is perfect for summer sheets and linen gauze curtains, such as those in our Pure line. It has a fine hand, lets the air filter through and gives a beautiful movement: it swells slightly in the breeze, creates soft waves and lets the light in diffusely.

Medium linen (170-230 gsm): my favorite for more important tablecloths and curtains

This weight is the balance I love most for table linen and some more structured curtains. It is a linen that has body, maintains a nice drape without being stiff, and is great because it combines freshness and presence. I choose it when I want a tablecloth that falls nicely on the table and immediately gives that authentic natural feel to the touch.

Heavy linen (over 240 g/m²): for those looking for matter and substance

When I want a particularly important tablecloth, or linen furniture pillows that will stand the test of time and look generous, then I opt for heavy linen. It never loses its ability to breathe, but gives a more decisive setting, perfect for big occasions.

Pure linen gauze curtains: my idea of summer at home

I couldn't imagine summer without linen gauze curtains, like the Pure, for example, are very simple, without embroidery or patterns, just to let the light do the rest.

I like to see them swaying lightly, creating little transparencies that protect against direct sun but let in a diffused brightness, which already feels cooler in itself. At home I have them in three different pastel colors, delicate and soothing. They are the best way to shut out the heat and at the same time circulate the air. Plus, no small detail: they keep many insects out, but without suffocating the space.

Whenever I enter a room with linen curtains, I immediately feel that it breathes better.

The summer table: anti-heat linen tablecloths.

I love setting the table in linen especially in hot weather.

Have you ever tried sitting for a long time with a synthetic tablecloth sticking to your legs? Here, with linen that never happens. It stays cool, gives a pleasant contact on the skin and immediately conveys a sense of elegant coziness, but without ever coming across as artifice.

For family meals I choose medium linen tablecloths, often embellished with embroidered borders, or I mix linen runners and placemats with openwork embroidery or small geometric patterns. I like to play with contrasts: a mastic linen juxtaposed with ivory napkins, or a pearl gray linen on which to lay more vividly colored flowers. Almost always this season I choose our Bauhaus or Amalfi tablecloths, which for me represent the perfect synthesis between the beauty of linen and the richness of the details.

The minimal, easy-to-match Bauhaus ones are inspired by graphic rigor combined with the choice of quality fabrics with a result that continues to give me satisfaction for its understated sophistication.

The Amalfi, on the other hand, have more prominent, hand-carved embroidery that stands out and enhances the fall of the fabric on the table, perfect for those who, like me, like to play with the contrasts between linen simplicity and craftsmanship.I also love to mix it up: an Amalfi mastic tablecloth with ivory Filo napkins, or vice versa, to create a balance of nuances that immediately makes for summer.

Also, as always, never paper napkins. Only linen or cotton because they make all the difference both in the daily gesture and when I want to welcome guests with a table that tells who they are.

The bed: my summer refuge of coolness

The bed is the place where the heat is felt the most and where we need freshness the most to get a good night's sleep.

That's why in summer I always choose light linen sheets and comforter covers, around 120-160 g/m². They are perfect because they keep the skin dry, absorb body moisture and release it immediately, so the bed always stays comfortable. Some people think linen is rough: that's just an old idea. Our linen is washed several times, becomes soft from the first use, and over time turns into a silky embrace.

When I make my bed with linen, I know I'm creating a little everyday luxury, the kind that really makes a difference in summer. Colors also play their part: in the room I love natural tones, from white to mastic to sage to delicate powdery pinks. All colors that invite rest and amplify the perception of coolness, as in these sheets

The bath: cotton and linen sponge, for a fresh feel

I never neglect the bathroom when choosing fabrics for summer. The watchword here is to dry well and fast, without risking bad odors or mold growth. For this I use both cotton sponge and linen with its light but absorbent texture.

The cotton sponge I choose is always natural, not treated with synthetic finishes. It absorbs water immediately, buffs the skin and promotes heat evaporation. Plus it dries quickly, preventing stagnation. Linen in the bathroom is a wonderful discovery: it is a very light fabric, takes up very little space, dries quickly and gives a gentle massage that reactivates microcirculation. Ideal for summer.

I also have linen bathrobes, which I always take with me when I travel this season: they weigh nothing and are a small pleasure that gives me a moment of true well-being after a shower.

Avoid synthetic fabrics with no regrets

I could repeat it over and over: no synthetic fabrics in summer, not only because they retain heat and sweat, but because they do not breathe, and this completely changes the perception of a room. A polyester curtain does not let air pass through it like a linen one, an acrylic tablecloth does not have the same pleasantness as a linen or cotton one. The same goes for bedding: waking up sweaty is never a good experience, and the wrong fabric can really ruin your rest.

Better to go for fewer but good pieces that last for years and get better with use. I have never had any doubts, and every summer confirms that.

Choosing linen and cotton for me means loving yourself and creating spaces where you can really breathe, even when the sun is beating down outside, to enjoy every moment of summer, with lightness and a touch of natural beauty that never gets tired.
