When it comes to furnishing our bathroom, we often take it for granted that towels and bathrobes are just a minor detail, to be chosen without too much thought. However, choosing high-quality products can make all the difference in our everyday lives, giving us a pleasant experience and creating a unique style in this room as well. In fact, as far as I am concerned, the true style of the home can also be created through details and those accessories that seem insignificant but, with a little care and attention, can make all the difference. It is precisely the choice of a low-quality towel that can bring down even the most beautiful bathroom, in which we may have invested with quality sanitaryware and refined decorations, which are instead enhanced by the choice of good towels. If you think about it, it is precisely the towels that make the difference between a great hotel and a mediocre one, with sumptuous bathroom linen, in which we can wrap ourselves for moments of the highest comfort. It is precisely for this reason that I decided to write this article in which I give you some useful advice when choosing towels for our bathroom, so that we can make a purchase that will give us satisfaction for years to come.

What are the factors to consider when choosing bathroom towels?

First of all, it is important to consider the quality of the fabric. High quality towels are usually made from Egyptian cotton, which is considered the best type of cotton for bath linen because it is soft, absorbent and durable. Other fabrics commonly used for good towels are pure cotton, linen and bamboo. The grammage of the fabric can also make a difference: towels with a higher grammage are usually thicker and absorb water better. In addition, it is important to pay attention to the workmanship: the best towels are usually made from double-twisted yarns, which make them stronger and more durable. Also, it is important to look for towels with reinforced seams to prevent them from tearing easily, given the frequent use we make of them and the stress they undergo with machine washing. Lastly, we cannot forget the style and colours of our towels: as I always tell you, elegance is in the accessories! It takes very little to create a luxurious and charming ambience, when you know how to choose with taste even the most apparently trivial things.

The characteristics of different towel fabrics

As we said, when it comes to choosing the best towels for our bathroom, it is important to consider the type of fabric. Cotton is probably the most common fabric used for towels, especially in its terry-towelling form. It is easy to see why, as it is a soft, absorbent and durable fibre that is ideal for everyday use. There are different types of cotton, including Egyptian cotton, which is considered the best type of cotton for towels because it is particularly soft, absorbent and durable, as well as pure cotton and Turkish cotton. The most popular are certainly the cotton terry towels in which we find a weave of yarns, one curly and one smooth, which serves to increase the drying capacity of the fabric, imitating the structure of the sea sponge and its absorbent characteristics. I particularly like them, especially when decorated with embroidery and combined with high borders with patterns, which make them eclectic even in their simplicity, as in the case of my beloved Bauhaus towels. Linen is another widely used fabric for the best towels: you know that I really love this fabric, as it is particularly resistant and long-lasting and is also very breathable, perfect for use in warm and humid environments such as the bathroom. Furthermore, linen is very elegant and therefore also suitable for making bathrobes or dressing gowns. Linen towels can be conveniently knotted at the waist and are therefore popular with men when shaving. Linen is also used to make disposable guest towels, a nice touch in a home or at an event Linen is very absorbent and dries quickly, a feature that should never be underestimated. I find it perfect for summer, with its lighter texture and unrivalled ease of drying. Bamboo is a relatively new fabric in the world of towels, but is fast becoming popular for its unique characteristics. Bamboo is a natural fibre that is both hard-wearing and gentle on the skin, although

The weight and grammage of towels

Once the fabric has been chosen, it is important to learn to evaluate the actual quality of the linen we want to buy: a nice towel may give us satisfaction for some time, but if we do not evaluate the other factors this feeling will disappear quickly. In general, the softest and best-drying towels are the heaviest and thickest ones, but it can be difficult to assess this if we buy online. To solve this problem we come to the rescue with the weight rating, which indicates the weight on the surface in grams per square metre and is indicated with g/sqm. In general, the more g/m² of a towel, the softer, more durable and absorbent it will be. This is especially true for cotton terry towels, where we choose towels with a weight of 400 to 600 grams per square metre: this is the most comfortable size on the skin, giving dreamy softness and a great drying capacity. If we want an even softer or more absorbent towel, we will go for the higher weights.

Which colours to choose for your towel

In addition to the quality of the fabric and workmanship, it is also important to consider the design and colour of the towels, choosing products that match your decorating style or that help give you a different touch when you feel like a change. I, for example, change my towels according to the seasons, so that I can give a different effect to my bathroom without radical changes. In summer, for example, I choose light colours, such as mastic or classic white, with details that give a touch of colour, as in our linen towel collection, Filo. With regard to combinations, then, towels are also an important element in bathroom style choices, which we can enrich and vary to our liking with very small and inexpensive changes. White linen for example is a great classic that always works, because it is elegant and allows us to adapt to any décor. However, you know that I love colours and patterns and I find that you can create very beautiful combinations by choosing linens that match the colours of the tiles, or of furniture and accessories, with patterns on the edges, whether floral, geometric or striped. You can choose to put towels in the same colour as your bathroom tiles or instead play on pleasant contrasts. Particularly in the case of bathrooms with dark or neutral tones, towels will play a key role in adding a touch of style and decor. So there are no limits to the imagination: the unique range of shades and the numerous combinations of terry towelling and high pure linen borders make the Borgo Delle Tovaglie towel collection suitable for any type of décor and stylishly enrich the bathroom furnishings, to have the pleasure and luxury of a spa at home. Have fun choosing your style, I, for example, love alternating flat Bauhaus borders for Him next to linen ruffles from the Gitane line in the same colour for Her. You can then coordinate towels, bathrobes in the same style and bath rugs.

How to choose bathroom carpets

Bath mats are essential for comfort and safety. In fact, people often walk barefoot in the bathroom and a bath mat is the best thing that can make us feel warm. in contact with our feet, it is therefore important that it is soft and cosy. It has to be big enough to move around on, but it also has to fit the measurements of bathrooms, which are sometimes a bit sacrificial. There are many different sizes for this, but the most common are the 50x70 cm shower mat and the so-called bath mat, which is longer and therefore also suitable for placement in front of a double washbasin. 140x50. A good bath mat should not curl up, and it must be able to absorb a lot of water when getting out of the shower. This is why they are made of heavier sponge. There are also special terry or chenille fabrics with very high curls or fringes on the market. The drawback, however, is that these mats collect a lot of dirt, are very bulky and dry very slowly. Finally, they take up a lot of space in the washing machine. We make double terry rugs topped with a central layer of linen. This makes them soft, stable and easily machine washable. Choose them in a colour match with your towels and change them with the rest of your towels.

How many towels is good to buy

When choosing towels for the bathroom, it is always a good idea to think about the needs we have, how many we have to use and the use we want to make of them. Bathroom linen sets usually consist of face towels, large towels designed for the shower and bidet, plus bathrobes if you don't already have them. To these I like to add lavettes, smaller towels designed for drying hands and particularly suitable if you have guests. The size varies from brand to brand, the size of the flannel is usually around 100 x 150 cm, the size of the face towel is around 60 x 100 cm, and the bidet towel measures 40 x 60 cm. The set of three is in my opinion the minimum size for each person, to be multiplied of course depending on the frequency of washing, which varies greatly depending on the seasons and how much we use them.

How to wash towels to make them last longer

A good towel is always durable and retains its softness for a long time. However, we must always remember that we must treat them in the best possible way to make them last, with the right washing and some care. Cotton towels in light colours can be washed in the washing machine at 60 °C, but do not overdo it with fabric softener, which instead of making them softer reduces their absorbency, making drying more difficult. To avoid this problem, I often use natural products instead of fabric softener, such as apple cider vinegar to which I add a few drops of essential oil, which also help to avoid skin irritation. They can be dried in the dryer, the sponge in particular is puffy and soft. In addition to washing, you can take care of your towels by treating them well every day: always hang them on a rack to let them dry better, to avoid bad smells, mould and fungus. Once they have been dried carefully, just fold them well, even without ironing them - I love the slightly wrinkled effect, especially in the case of linen, on which I have written a guide that you can read here.

How often should towels be changed?

Another factor to consider when buying towels is how often they should be changed. In the home, it is always best to have at least three complete sets for each member of the family, so that they can be changed often and avoid wearing out with too many washes. Towels can harbour germs and bacteria because of the moisture they are always exposed to, especially if they do not have time to dry properly. They must therefore be changed often, to maintain a healthy and comfortable environment and to avoid unpleasant odours. At home, I for example change face and shower towels twice a week, and bidet towels even more often.

When to buy new towels for your bathroom

Precisely because of washing, towels, even good quality ones, tend to wear out and spoil faster than the linen in the rest of the house. The rule of course is that quality always gives us a longer lifespan, but we must also learn to understand when it is time to buy new ones. So pay attention to the threads that come loose and above all to the level of absorbency, which when it drops a lot is a sign that we need to replace them.
